Today, Sylvia Jones, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, issued the following statement about the Ontario government's decision to appeal the Superior Court of Justice's ruling on Bogaerts v. Attorney General of Ontario:
"More than 60 per cent of Canadians have a pet in their home, and these pets are a part of our families. We recognize the importance of animal welfare for small animals and livestock. While our government has decided to appeal to the Ontario Court of Appeal in the recent case of Bogaerts v. Attorney General of Ontario, that does not mean that Ontario's animal welfare regime cannot be strengthened and improved.
"Our Government will continue working for the people and will explore options to ensure appropriate measures are in place to provide animals and their owners the protections they deserve and that Ontarians expect. We have already begun conversations with stakeholders and will continue seeking ideas and input in the coming months. Our goal is an approach that is transparent and accountable, and ultimately improves the animal welfare system across Ontario."
